Millennial Curse or Millennial Gift by Patrice Brown
Millennials or Generation Y is an age group of human beings that were born from 1980-1995. There are many stereotypes and connotations on the millennial generation. I don't believe anyone ever tries to understand or sees the way these things makes someone a part of this generation feels. Some of those things are (that can be viewed here https://www.livescience.com/38061-millennials-generation-y.html) we're lazy, self-centered, delusional, prone to jump from job to job, slow to adulthood (i.e., moving out of parents house and marriage), living our lives through the Internet and social media. On more of a positive side, but still unfortunate, is we're very seldom recognized for the great things that we do. At the same URL it states positively, we're characterized as open-minded, self-expressive, liberal, and confident. Millennial are also referred to as "Generation Me".
So why are we so shamed for loving ourselves, not settling, and simply trying to adapt to everything that is going on around us, including technology and simply world-change? Some people don't realize how hard we have it. I'm a millennial and too many times people proudly shame me for being so to my face. You even hear it on television shows; about how millennials are being looked over for jobs and several other opportunities. We are only adapting to the time we are living in. With technology and social media, we constantly have to see beautiful people every day and try not to compare ourselves and normal lives to other people. With internet being accessible, literally at our finger tips, we're more exposed to the hardships of the world including police brutality and just violence in general. We're subjected to the spirits, both positive and negative, in the world because they're in our pockets on our phones. We have to do more than ever to protect our spirits and mental health.
Social media is (un)fortunately, a lifestyle for us. We can't put it down and expect to just forget about it. Everyone is always talking about it. Careers are made on social media. People make money from social media. People meet their future husbands or wives on social media. Yes, people can also cheat on social media. Social media changes the dynamics of life completely and this is just something we are forced to adapt to. We are encouraged to take a break from social media when things become too much for our mental health but that's the same as saying someone should stay inside and take a break from the outside world. It may be difficult for everyone else to understand but the Internet and social media are a part of us and its a way of life.

An article by Jenny Marie published on the National Alliance of Mental Health states that the Millennial general is referred to as the "anxious generation". I'm not sure if we're more depressed than anyone of a different age group, but we are subjected to so many things that cause us to be anxious and depressed. At least, mental health is more exposed now than ever before. At least, we're comfortable with expressing ourselves. I believe in this time more than ever, we're bringing awareness and openness to so many things including mental health but as well as the LGBTQ community, police brutality, cultural differences, interracial dating, violence, the community, and more. We are legit changing the world and everyone else just may be merely jealous is all *shrugs shoulders*. We're liberated alright *throws punch*! We're proud of who we are and we believe we all have a voice and the power to change the world.
Isn't the goal of any generation of parents and leaders for the next generation to be better than them? So why shame us for adapting to this lifestyle? Why ban us for corporate work places when you have to retire some day? Who do you all think the next presidents are going to be? The main reason for us "jumping for job to job" is because we don't want to settle. We believe to be successful we must grow. If one job is hindering us from growing or has no opportunity for growth, then we probably will only stay for a year if that. We're not wrong for that. We're merely looking for a work place to call home and if a place doesn't live up that, we don't want to waste our time. Its not because we don't know what we want or that we're constantly changing our minds. You ever think the rest of the world should try to adapt to us instead of the other way around? The world has always been a changing place so why be surprised now?
Millennials... We believe we can change the world by starting a business, brand, or even just an Instagram page to inspire others or make money. Yes we like money, but we also love making a difference. No, all of us aren't the same but that's what makes us so great. We're ambitious, creative, and unique and sometimes people will hate us for just that. That is actually what being Modernly Ethnic is about. Modernly Ethnic initials are "ME". This brand is about being ourselves today, no matter our ethnicity or race; expressing ourselves the exact way we are; having a voice and being a change in the world; not conforming to the ways of the past; being cultural yet in our own way; being comfortable with every aspects of ourselves; BEING WHO WE ARE!
